FastSoft in the Cloud

Latency is the New Bottleneck for Web Applications

Now that enterprises are taking a serious look at building private clouds, and more mid-sized companies are comfortable moving some or all of its compute services to the cloud, we believe slow web pages due to latency will soon become a severe bottleneck.

The business reasons to use cloud resources are many – small capital outlay, scalability, easier administration, reduced load on own servers, to name a few. But the speed of the page downloads is a key component of strong user adoption. For example, leading U.S. web companies have found that a mere two second delay in web page download can lower revenue anywhere from 1% to 4% (see Gomez report).

Origin Content Acceleration

The files and web objects served from the cloud can be categorized into two groups: cacheable and un-cacheable. Cacheable (which are usually also static) files can be served either from origin or via a content distribution network (CDN). A CDN copies – or caches – these files on secure servers closer to the end-user, which ensures a faster download by avoiding long delays (latency) and congestion.

The un-cacheable group of files and web objects consists primarily of dynamically-generated objects that must be served from origin. This is where TCP acceleration is required at the origin server. Say, for example, you cache 50% of your cloud content using a CDN, but the other half is served from origin. These dynamic objects suffer slowdowns due to latency and Internet congestion, and as a result your web applications are frustratingly slow or, at worst, unusable.

How FastSoft Helps

FastSoft’s products accelerate all TCP connections in the private cloud, including cacheable and non-cacheable objects. It eliminates the effects of latency so that web apps run smoothly. Unlike WAN optimization devices that require hardware in the datacenter and client software on all desktops and laptops, FastSoft doesn’t require any desktop downloads, installations, or maintenance. It is installed in the datacenter only, which helps keep IT support costs low.
